HOTTUB — 12 am

HOTTUB brings punk, funk and crunk from Oaktown, drawing from dancehall, punk, Miami Bass and girl group pop to create their hype sound, and a live show full of crowd antics, makeshift slip & slides and tricked out, thrift-store-fabulous outfits.

When a band names itself after a structure that is pretty much mandatory in all great wet 'n' wild debaucheries, you know you're in for quite a ride. The Oakland based quintet HOTTUB has been busting out jams since 2005, when producer Jason Stinnett (aka Jaysonic) and vocalist Nicole Feliciano (aka Coco Machete) joined forces, later inviting Jennifer Ackerman (aka Loli PoP) and Amber Griffin-Royal (aka Ambr33zy) on vocals, and Mark Gregory (aka Funky Finger Mark) on keyboards. HOTTUB draws from dancehall, punk, Miami Bass and girl group pop to create their hype sound, and their live show is full of crowd antics, makeshift slip & slides and tricked out, thrift-store-fabulous outfits. The group recently toured North America with UK pop darlings The Ting Tings, who had been giving them shout outs in various blogs and magazine interviews, including a video interview with Perez Hilton. Their debut EP On Blast! is available on iTunes, released under their own independent record label LeHeat, a most appropriate name as they do bring some serious heat. Look out, HOTTUB is blasting through a city near you!

SONNY AND THE SUNSETS — 11 pm

LISTEN Sonny and the Sunsets Lovin' On an Older Gal

Sonny and the Sunsets' vintage-style west coast pop songs tell sordid tales of death, drowning, outcasts, heavenly visions and otherworldly despair. Their newest LP, Tomorrow is Alright radiates with a classic yet indefinable sound, almost like a futuristic 50's R&B.

California native Sonny Smith started his career playing in a blues piano bar nestled in the mountain towns of Colorado at the age of eighteen. He then embarked on a journey to Central America, where he lived on an organic farm in the Central American jungle, earning money while touring with a rag tag busking band and playing hotels and cabanas along the coast of the Caribbean. In 1996, he moved back home to San Francisco, where he continued to focus on writing music, short stories and plays. In the early 2000's he toured in support of Neko Case and Jolie Holland and released a string of solo albums titled, This is My Story, This is My Song, Sordid Tales of Love and Woe, One Act Plays and Fruitvale. Tomorrow is Alright continues his exploration of outcasts, weirdos, freaks, death, love and atypical transformation.

In 2007, he formed Sonny and The Sunsets with help from friends Shayde Sartin & Tim Cohen (of the Fresh & Onlys), Tahlia Harbour (of Citay and The Dry Spells), Ryan Browne and Kelley Stoltz (Sub Pop Recordings) among others. Together the band created Tomorrow is Alright, recorded on a classic 1970's 388 Tascam tape recorder in various uncommon places including out of Sonny's camper. Tomorrow is Alright is full of straightforward-pop songs that recall the 1950's era doo wop of The Falcons combined with the direct sincerity and positive spirit of Modern Lovers' Jonathan Richman as well as the dark confessional humor of cartoonists like Robert Crumb and Ivan Brunetti.

Sonny Smith currently resides in the Sunset District of San Francisco where he stays busy writing music and providing occasional care to disabled war veterans and other people who have fallen through the cracks of society through a Bay Area based social work agency F & CMS. He works out of an office in the back of his friends' surf shop. In addition to his work as a sometimes columnist or occasional playwright he also opened "100 Records" his first ever solo- art exhibition. The show ran for seven weeks at Gallery 16 in San Francisco; it featured 100 album-covers created by 90 different artists from around the world along with one hundred songs written and recorded by Sonny himself and a custom built jukebox to play those songs. The show then traveled to Austin and New York.

JILL TRACY — 9:30 pm

LISTEN Jill Tracy Evil Night Together

Jill Tracy will transport you into a seductive and magical realm far beyond the Everyday. The place where we wished we lived. A dark, elegant netherworld full of hidden passageways, wonder cabinets, and opium dens. Of monsters, marvels and mayhem. You know it's not safe here; but with Jill Tracy as your guide, you'll be in no hurry to leave. The San Francisco-based singer/pianist/storyteller has garnered multiple awards and a passionate following for her evocative cinematic music, sophisticated lyrics, old- world glamour, and curious passion for strange tales. Hailed a “femme fatale for the thinking man,” by San Francisco Chronicle, Jill Tracy was described by NPR's All Things Considered as "utterly intriguing, transporting you into a magical world solely of her creation." LA Weekly has deemed her "the cult darling of the Underworld." She is the modern day woman of mystery.

With four albums to her credit, Jill Tracy's music has appeared on CBS, NBC, PBS, and numerous independent and feature films. The song "Evil Night Together" has become a sultry underground anthem for neo-burlesque, gothic cabaret, and modern belly dancers all over the globe. Her acclaimed music video "The Fine Art of Poisoning," (a collaboration with Oakland animator Bill Domonkos) has won over 30 film festival awards internationally and was just honored at London's famed National Gallery.

She has shared the stage with the likes of Nina Hagen, Lydia Lunch, Richard Strange, Jello Biafra, and is currently collaborating with music icon David J (Bauhaus/Love and Rockets.) She has been the featured performer at Anne Rice's famed New Orleans Halloween Ball and was commissioned to compose the Midnight Waltz for the International Ball of Vampires in Portland, OR.

As a youngster, Jill Tracy was drawn to classic suspense, film noir, and horror movie scores, which she cites today as some of her strongest influences. These passions are evident in her unusual piano performance style. Virtually self taught, her singular blend of dreamy flourishes, hypnotic grooves, and

dark-alley classical conjures up chiaroscuro shades of another era, but at the same time, the sound is shockingly new. And with her trademark voice of cut-velvet smoke, she reveals a talent for making rather unsettling subjects remarkably alluring.

"I feel that I need to be a beacon for people, and allow them into the swampy place in their souls where the sinister and sensual meet," Jill Tracy explains in a recent interview in TOR. "It's my purpose to perpetuate the long-lost magic, allow people to slip into the cracks, to pry up the floorboards and search deeply. Believe. Imagine. It’s so important to hold on to that childlike sense of marvel."

"Genius, history-compressing sets that melted my panties into a sugary lump" —San Francisco Guardian

"There's just one thing that should make New Yorkers envy San Francisco nightlife, and that's Honey Soundsystem. Honeyboys Ken Vulsion, Pee Play, Robot Hustle, Jason Kendig, Josh Cheon, and Derek Bobus have created a hedonist’s dream in their weekly party, and they soundtrack it with Strictly Rhythm, Hardkiss, Move D, Horsemeat Disco, Hercules & Love Affair, dark wave, and bitchy Sandra Bernhard samples."
—The Village Voice

"Honey Sundays has taken on a very dark, lasers-in-the-forest look. You could call it a gay witch disco kidnapping."
—SF GATE

Forming in January 2006, Honey started turning heads with their cunning ad campaigns, decadent themes, private warehouse parties and of-course their floor stomping DJ sets. They have hosted DJ's from around the world, including Todd Terje, Horse Meat Disco, Stefan Goldmann, Solar, Hercules & Love Affair, Discodromo, Cosmo Vitelli, DJ Spun, Eric Duncan, DJ Kaos, Kim Ann Foxman, Neon Leon, and Trocodero Transfer legend Steve Fabus.

In 2009 The crew became instrumental in the release of never before heard music from San Francisco producer Patrick Cowley. The release of the Catholic record on Macro Records was followed by a month long exhibition the crew produced on the life and times of Cowley. In 2010 Honey released a full length compilation of like-minded producers from around the globe. Brotherhood came in at number two on JUNOs chart in it's first month of release (just behind Tiesto!).

Individually, crew members have been changing the landscape of music with record labels (Dark Entries, MR.INTL), live sets (Robot Hustle's all analog project Cryo-cell), appearences in New York, London, Berlin, and at their notorious weekly Sunday party at the Holy Cow in "the most sexually abrasive & peculiar district in town."

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. have been employing satire and high drama to shed light on serious issues since 1979. From a humble beginning in the Castro, America’s first order of 21st century nuns formed to improve the socio-cultural, spiritual, educational, and artistic experiences of the communities in which members live, work, and have creative interactions. Each individual Sister is artist and subject, priestess and counselor, nurturer and provocateur in the human quest for a joyful life. We are blessed to be able to share our vast archives with the public as part of Ritual and Redemption. From the Rosary In A Time Of Nuclear Peril to the exorcism of Pope John Paul II to the taking of our vows and painting of our “white face”, Sisters have been creating rituals, blessings, art, literature, and general debauchery designed to promulgate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt for the past 30 years.

A FIRE IN MY BELLY, BY DAVID WOJNAROWICZ
11 pm–2 am, on continuous loop

YBCA strongly protests censorship in any form. In alliance with museums and art centers around the country, we present A Fire In My Belly by David Wojnarowicz, a highly regarded artist/activist who died in 1992.

more about the controversy surrounding this film…

In an appalling act of censorship, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery removed this video last week. It was part of “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” the first major museum exhibition to address gay and lesbian identity in the arts. This action was taken after objections were raised by members of Congress and the Catholic League, who believed the work to be “sacrilegious.”
